Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Predicted in Kerala Until May 14; Yellow Alerts Issued in Several Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds until May 14, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts for multiple districts. The warning also includes the possibility of lightning and strong winds, posing potential risks to residents in affected areas.

The IMD defines a yellow alert as the forecast of heavy rainfall, ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours. The yellow alerts have been issued for the following districts:

  • May 12: Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur
  • May 13: Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram
  • May 14: Ernakulam, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur

Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant, especially against risks such as waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and potential landslides. Travelers and locals are urged to take necessary precautions, as thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h are expected.

In addition to the rain warnings, the IMD has issued a caution about possible sea erosion along the Kerala coast due to high waves, particularly in coastal regions, until tomorrow evening. Fishermen and coastal residents are urged to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.

The IMD has also forecasted the arrival of the southwest monsoon earlier than usual, expected by May 27, marking the earliest onset since 2009. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to issue updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to follow official advisories and stay informed about the weather.
