Heatwave Alert: Kerala Issues Safety Guidelines for Public

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has issued precautionary guidelines as temperatures rise across the state. Officials warned that prolonged exposure to heat can lead to sunstroke, heatstroke, and dehydration.

The public has been advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm. People are urged to drink water regularly, even if not thirsty. Authorities cautioned against consuming dehydrating drinks such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and soft drinks during the day.

Wearing light-coloured cotton clothes and using umbrellas or hats has been recommended. People should also consume fruits, vegetables, and oral rehydration solutions. The agency warned of increased fire risks in markets, buildings, and waste disposal areas. Authorities have been asked to conduct fire safety audits.

There is also a risk of forest fires. Residents near forest areas and tourists have been urged to follow safety instructions strictly. Schools have been directed to ensure drinking water and proper ventilation. Outdoor activities and assemblies should be limited during peak heat hours. Parents and school authorities have been asked to take extra care to protect children from heat exposure.
