Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is reeling under intense heat conditions, prompting authorities to issue an Orange Alert in Idukki district, where UV radiation levels have surged sharply. Munnar recorded a UV Index of 8, the highest in the state, signalling a very high health risk from sun exposure. Meanwhile, Yellow Alerts have been sounded in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Wayanad, where the UV Index has reached 6. Officials say the UV index is climbing in tandem with the rising temperatures.
Health authorities have warned that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn, skin ailments, eye disorders, and other serious health issues. Residents are strongly advised to avoid direct sunlight, particularly between 10 am and 3 pm, when UV radiation peaks. Outdoor workers, fishermen, bikers, tourists, cancer patients, and those with skin or eye conditions should take extra precautions. The public is urged to wear hats, use umbrellas and sunglasses, and opt for full-coverage cotton clothing when stepping outdoors. Elevated UV levels are expected to persist, especially in hilly and tropical regions across the state.
