Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak in Pune: 101 Cases Reported, Water Contamination Suspected

Pune is witnessing a worrying surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases, with 101 reported infections and one fatality as of January 27, 2025. In response, the Union Health Ministry has deployed a team of medical experts to assist local authorities in containing the outbreak. GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to weakness, paralysis, and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

Health officials are investigating potential causes, with preliminary reports linking the outbreak to bacterial contamination in water sources across seven locations in the city. Residents have raised concerns over water quality, with some suspecting a well in the Sinhgad Road area as a possible source. A Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been deployed to assess the situation.

Authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as unexplained weakness, tingling, or difficulty moving. With early diagnosis and treatment, including plasma exchange and immunoglobulin therapy, the severity of the disease can be reduced. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further spread and implement necessary safety measures.
