Green Signal for Kerala’s Landmark Twin Tunnel: Kozhikode-Wayanad Project Gets Environmental Clearance

New Delhi/Kerala: In a major breakthrough for Kerala’s infrastructure ambitions, the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted environmental clearance for the much-awaited Kozhikode-Wayanad twin tunnel project — a transformative step poised to revolutionize travel through the Western Ghats.

The ₹2,000 crore mega project envisions twin tunnels cutting through the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, dramatically reducing travel time and distance between Kozhikode and Wayanad. Once operational, the tunnels are expected to decongest the overloaded Thamarassery Ghat Road, notorious for traffic snarls and landslides.

The green nod followed a thorough evaluation of the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and public feedback, addressing concerns over deforestation, wildlife, and ecological balance. The clearance is contingent on strict safeguards, including afforestation, wildlife corridors, and slope protection measures to minimize environmental impact.

Beyond infrastructure, the twin tunnels are projected to boost regional tourism, trade, and safety, offering seamless connectivity for residents and businesses alike.

With environmental approval secured, the project now advances to forest clearance and land acquisition, paving the way for one of Kerala’s most ambitious engineering feats to become a reality.
