Govt Mandates Shift to PNG, Warns of LPG Supply Cut in Connected Areas

The Centre has directed that households with access to piped natural gas (PNG) must switch from LPG, warning that cooking gas supply could be discontinued for those who fail to comply. The move is part of a broader push to expand gas infrastructure and reduce dependence on a single fuel source.

The decision comes amid concerns over LPG availability, as ongoing disruptions in West Asia have affected supplies. By promoting PNG considered more reliable due to continuous pipeline delivery and diversified sourcing. The government aims to strengthen energy security and ensure uninterrupted access to cooking fuel.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, which focuses on speeding up pipeline expansion, simplifying approvals, and encouraging wider adoption of PNG among households and commercial users.

Officials say the transition will make fuel access more efficient while reducing the logistical challenges associated with LPG distribution, such as cylinder bookings and refills.
