Govindachamy, the convict in the infamous Soumya rape and murder case who recently escaped from Kannur Central Jail and was later recaptured within hours, is set to be transferred to the Viyyur Central Jail in Thrissur. Authorities have decided to shift him to Viyyur due to its status as a high-security prison.
The transfer process is expected to be completed within the next two days. At present, Govindachamy remains in police custody, and a new case has been registered against him for escaping from prison. After completing the interrogation in connection with the escape, he will be presented in court and temporarily returned to Kannur Jail.
Further questioning by jail officials will also be conducted before his official transfer. The shift to Viyyur will take place with court approval and is part of a broader strategy to ensure higher levels of security.
In the wake of the escape, four jail staff members at Kannur Central Jail have been suspended pending investigation. According to ADGP of Prisons, Balram Kumar Upadhyay, the suspension followed an initial assessment that found lapses in jail security. He stated that Govindachamy’s escape appeared to be well-planned, and while his quick recapture was a relief, a detailed probe led by the Kannur Range DIG is underway to uncover the full extent of the incident.
