Global Eyes on Vatican: Conclave to Elect New Pope Begins Amid Secrecy and Tradition

Vatican City— The sacred and secretive process to elect the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church has officially begun today as 133 cardinal electors gather inside the iconic Sistine Chapel. The conclave follows the death of Pope Francis, marking the beginning of a historic transition for over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.

The proceedings were formally inaugurated with a solemn Mass this morning, after which the cardinals entered seclusion within Vatican City’s Santa Marta residence. Strict privacy measures are in place, including signal jammers and physical isolation, to prevent any external interference.

The first round of voting is expected to take place Thursday, with ballots burned in a traditional stove — white smoke will indicate a successful election, while black smoke will signify a failed vote, prompting additional rounds.

Vatican Media Director Matteo Bruni confirmed that preparations, including the installation of the smoke-emitting chimney atop the chapel, have been finalized. The new Pope must secure a two-thirds majority to be elected.

While some conclaves in history have concluded within hours, others have taken years — adding suspense to a process steeped in centuries-old ritual and global anticipation.
