Thiruvananthapuram: A fresh low-pressure system has developed over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a deep depression by Friday, heading towards the Andhra–Odisha coast, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While Kerala faces no immediate threat, the state may experience isolated spells of rain.
The IMD has cautioned that the southwest monsoon’s withdrawal will be delayed this year, unlike previous seasons. The newly formed system is likely to keep rainfall active across several parts of the country through the first week of October.
Heavy rains are forecast in eastern, northeastern, and central India in the coming days. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that favorable conditions for the monsoon’s retreat will emerge only around October 9.
So far, the monsoon has withdrawn from parts of northwest India, Gujarat, Rajasthan, portions of Madhya Pradesh, and the western Himalayan belt. From October 9 onward, withdrawal is expected to cover central India, Uttar Pradesh, and nearby regions, he added.
