Kochi: V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, former Kerala minister and State Vice President of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), passed away on Monday at the age of 73. He was undergoing treatment for lung cancer at a private hospital in Kochi.
A seasoned politician, Ebrahim Kunju served as a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) and held ministerial office twice in the Kerala government. During his tenure, he handled key portfolios including the Industries Department and the Public Works Department (PWD).
He made his legislative debut in 2001, winning from the Mattancherry constituency. He was re-elected from Mattancherry in 2006, and later represented Kalamassery in the 2011 and 2016 Assembly elections, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Kerala politics.
Ebrahim Kunju’s career also witnessed controversy, as he was arrested by the Vigilance Department in connection with the Palarivattom flyover corruption case, one of the state’s high-profile investigations.
His passing marks the end of a long and influential political journey, and condolences have been pouring in from across the political spectrum, remembering him as a leader who played a significant role in Kerala’s public life.
