Thiruvananthapuram: The first low-pressure system of the new year has taken shape over the Bay of Bengal, setting the stage for widespread rainfall across Kerala on Friday and Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced.
The system has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. Meteorologists say it is likely to strengthen into a depression within the next 24 hours over the southwest Bay of Bengal and move in a west–northwest direction over the following 48 hours.
Adding to the weather activity, two cyclonic circulations are currently active—one over the Kanyakumari sea region and another over the central east Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area. The combined effect of these systems is expected to trigger intense weather conditions, including isolated heavy rainfall on Saturday.
As a precaution, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, warning of possible heavy rain. Heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
Residents, especially in vulnerable areas, have been advised to stay alert as the evolving weather systems could bring significant rain and changing atmospheric conditions over the coming days.
