Tonight, October 17, 2024, we will witness the year’s closest and brightest supermoon, known as the Hunter’s Moon. This supermoon, occurring when the Moon is at its nearest point to Earth in its orbit, will appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.
The name “Hunter’s Moon” comes from its historical association with hunting, as animals were more visible in the cleared fields after the harvest.
This full moon will be the final supermoon of 2024, making it a particularly special event. If you’re able to catch it near the horizon during sunset, the moon may also appear orange due to the atmospheric conditions, adding to its striking appearance.
