Electoral College: The Controversial Key Player in U.S. Presidential Elections

By Our Foreign Correspondent.

Washington, Sept 04 (IVC)   It  was  not  the  popular votes, but  the  electoral college   is  the decisive  factor  for  determining  the  victory in the  election.    The  fight  for  the  possession of the White  House  in January 2025 in between  the  Vice  President  Kamala  Harris  and     Minnesota Governor  Tim Walz  for  the  Democratic Party  and Donald Trump and  his running mate J D Vance for  the Republican Party   was progressing .
In the US Presidential election , it  was not  enough for  the  candidate  to win the  popular  vote in percentage  terms. They have  to win the  electoral  college, a  group of presidential electors  from each State whose number  is  determined  by the  population of the  State.
The  electoral  college  consists  of 538 electors and the  candidate requires a majority of 270  votes to become  the  president.   The  large  states such  as California, Texas  and New York  for example 55,38 and  29  electoral college votes.   The  position  of  the electoral college  votes in the swing  States  like  Pennsylvania (19), Michigan (15), Georgia (16), North Carolina (16), Wisconsin (10), Arizona (11), Nevada (6) and Florida (30).
In the  latest  opinion polls  in the  swing states  Kamala Harris  is  ahead  of 3.5  percentage  points in popular votes.    Both parties  are  locked  in horns to  score  the maximum  electoral colleges votes.
Trump camp  finds consolation , though Harris  was  ahead  of Trump in popular   votes, it would  not be matter and the Democratic  would get sufficient number of electoral college votes to win the  election.   Trump  camp is  confident  of winning the  election as there is two months  for November 05 election and the electoral winds would flow in favour of the Republican party.
