Diwali 2025: The Festival of Lights Illuminates the Nation with Joy and Tradition

India is glowing bright today as millions celebrate Diwali — the Festival of Lights, a vibrant symbol of joy, hope, and the triumph of good over evil. Observed on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Ashwin, this sacred day — also known as Naraka Chaturdashi — marks the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

According to ancient tradition, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the restoration of righteousness. The festival is also dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the bringer of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of wisdom. In different regions of India, the celebration honors other deities such as Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, and Vishwakarma.

Beyond religion, Diwali unites people across faiths. Jains observe it to commemorate Lord Mahavira’s nirvana, Sikhs celebrate it as Bandi Chhor Divas, marking Guru Hargobind’s release from Mughal captivity, while Newar Buddhists worship Goddess Lakshmi. In Eastern India and Bangladesh, the day is dedicated to Goddess Kali, representing strength and protection.

Across cities, towns, and villages, homes, temples, and workplaces sparkle with diyas, candles, and decorative lights. People rise early for ritual oil baths, exchange sweets, and decorate courtyards with colorful rangolis. Fireworks light up the night sky, while families and friends gather to share feasts, gifts, and laughter.

For communities everywhere, Diwali is not just a festival — it’s a celebration of togetherness, renewal, and gratitude. Parades, cultural performances, and festive fairs add to the spirit of joy. Exchanging greeting cards and boxes of sweets has also become a cherished tradition among Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs.

Amid the glow of lamps and the aroma of sweets, Diwali reminds everyone to cherish the light within — to spread love, compassion, and positivity.
