Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has announced that 50% of Delhi government employees will work from home in response to the capital’s worsening air quality. The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded an alarming level of 460, placing it in the “severe” category, as authorities scramble to mitigate the health and environmental crisis.
In addition to the work-from-home directive, other emergency measures include:
- Ban on construction activities across the city.
- Closure of schools for most students.
- Consideration of implementing the odd-even vehicle scheme to reduce vehicular emissions.
The crisis, exacerbated by weak winds and seasonal pollution sources, is prompting calls for collaborative action from neighboring states and the central government. Residents have been advised to minimize outdoor activities due to potential health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular complications.
The measures aim to alleviate immediate health risks while addressing long-term pollution challenges.
