Deep Depression Looms Over Bay of Bengal; Twin Cyclonic Systems to Bring Widespread Rain to Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Weather conditions are set to turn active across Kerala as a strong low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression in the coming hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks the first low-pressure system of the new year, formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean.

The system, currently in a strengthened phase, is expected to move west–northwestwards over the next 48 hours. Its impact, combined with two cyclonic circulations active over the Kanyakumari sea region and the central east Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep, is likely to trigger widespread rainfall across the state from Friday onwards.

The IMD has warned of isolated heavy rainfall on Saturday, prompting authorities to issue a yellow alert in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts as a precautionary measure.

Heavy rainfall is defined as precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Residents have been advised to remain alert and follow official weather updates as changing atmospheric conditions may lead to intensified rainfall over the weekend.
