Cyclonic Disturbance Brewing in Bay of Bengal: Kerala on Alert for Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms Till Sunday

Kerala is set to experience heavy rains and thunderstorms till Sunday as a fresh weather system builds up over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for five districts, warning of isolated heavy showers and strong winds over the next few days.

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea and a cyclonic circulation up to 1.5 km above mean sea level near Kanyakumari are currently influencing weather conditions across the region. Another cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the northern Bay of Bengal by Friday, intensifying rainfall activity in the state.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Kerala-Lakshadweep and Karnataka coasts due to rough sea conditions and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h.

For today, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kannur are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts on Friday, while Palakkad and Malappuram remain under alert through the weekend.

The IMD defines “heavy rain” as rainfall measuring between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours. With the combined influence of multiple weather systems, Kerala is bracing for a wet and stormy weekend ahead.
