Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Rain Alert in Kerala; Yellow Warning Issued for Two Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala, driven by a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea near southern Kerala. In view of the weather conditions, a Yellow Alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts for tomorrow.

According to the IMD, isolated heavy rain refers to rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Along with the alert, the department has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious.

Meanwhile, a very deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified further and is expected to move west-northwestwards over the next 36 hours. The system is likely to cross the Sri Lankan coast between Hambantota and Kalmunai by tonight, the IMD said.

The cyclonic circulation near Kerala is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall across the state from January 8 to 12, with the possibility of isolated heavy showers on January 10.

In a relief to the fishing community, the IMD has confirmed that fishing activities can continue as usual today along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts, as no adverse sea conditions are expected at present.
