A low-pressure area formed over Malaysia and the Malacca Strait is likely to intensify into a cyclone over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the coming hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system has already strengthened into a deep depression and is expected to move in a west–northwest direction, gaining further intensity and developing into a cyclonic storm.
If the system intensifies into a cyclone, it will be named ‘Senyar’, meaning “Lion,” a name given by the United Arab Emirates as per the rotating list of names for cyclones formed over the northern Indian Ocean.
Due to the system’s influence, Kerala is likely to receive thunderstorms and rain till tomorrow, with isolated heavy rainfall expected today, the IMD said.
Meanwhile, another cyclonic circulation currently positioned near the Kanyakumari coast has intensified into a low-pressure area over the Kanyakumari Sea, Sri Lanka, and the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is also expected to move north–northwest, strengthen further into a more marked low-pressure area, and potentially intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.
With both systems influencing the region, Kerala is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall for the next five days, the IMD added.
Considering the possibility of heavy rainfall today, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta districts.
