Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a revised weather warning for Kerala as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, bringing with it the potential for very heavy rainfall and strong winds across several parts of the state.
Initially, the forecast predicted heavy rain in three districts, but the latest update has expanded the Orange Alert to five districts — Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta — where isolated very heavy downpours are expected over the next 24 hours.
The IMD has also warned of strong coastal winds reaching speeds of up to 74 km/h, prompting officials to urge fishermen and coastal residents to remain on high alert. Rough sea conditions are likely to persist for the next couple of days.
For Monday, rain alerts are in effect for all districts except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad are under Yellow Alert for isolated heavy rain.
On Tuesday, the Yellow Alert will cover Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki as rainfall is expected to continue under the cyclone’s influence.
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during heavy rain, avoid travel through landslide-prone areas, and follow official advisories as Cyclone Montha continues to impact Kerala’s weather pattern.
