Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala continues to battle intense rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Weather experts warn that two low-pressure systems — one over the Arabian Sea and another over the Bay of Bengal — are gaining strength, raising the possibility of a cyclone forming early next week.
A deep depression has already developed over the east-central Arabian Sea, after merging with a cyclonic circulation that earlier covered parts of north Karnataka and north Kerala. Meteorologists caution that this system could bring strong winds and heavy downpours along Kerala’s coastal belt.
Meanwhile, the Bay of Bengal system is also showing alarming signs. The circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea has now intensified into a depression and is expected to evolve into a cyclonic storm by October 27, moving west-northwestward toward the southwest Bay of Bengal.
The IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall across Kerala till October 28, warning fishermen and coastal residents to remain cautious. Winds blowing at 45–55 km/h, gusting up to 65 km/h, could make sea conditions rough and dangerous, particularly over the southern Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal regions.
As Kerala braces for turbulent weather, authorities are urging the public to stay alert and avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
