Kochi: In a high-stakes raid, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) busted a cache of substandard and counterfeit products at Amazon’s warehouse in Kalamassery, Kochi. The surprise inspection, prompted by intelligence reports, uncovered a large stock of domestic appliances, kitchen tools, toys, and footwear—many fraudulently marked with fake ISI certification labels.
Officials revealed that several products either bore forged ISI marks or failed to display legally mandated labeling, violating key safety regulations. The fake labels were poorly printed, easily removable, and failed to meet official standards—raising red flags about consumer safety.
The BIS confirmed widespread misuse of its certification mark and flagged serious lapses in product quality. Legal action has been initiated against the culprits, who could face up to two years in jail and fines up to ten times the profit made from these illegal sales.
This enforcement action sheds light on the growing threat of counterfeit goods in e-commerce and reinforces BIS’s commitment to upholding product integrity and protecting consumer rights.
