COVID-19 Cases Rise Again in India: Kerala Tops with 430 Active Cases as New Omicron Subvariants Spread

India is experiencing a fresh uptick in COVID-19 infections, with 1,010 active cases reported across the country as of May 29, 2025. Kerala leads the surge with 430 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (210), Karnataka (126, including 40 new infections), and Delhi (104).

Health experts attribute the rise to the emergence of two new Omicron subvariants — NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 — currently under global surveillance by the World Health Organization (WHO). These variants, detected in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, are highly transmissible but largely causing mild symptoms such as sore throat, low-grade fever, fatigue, congestion, and mild gastrointestinal issues.

Seven COVID-related deaths have been reported in this wave, mostly among people with underlying health conditions. In response, states including Kerala and Maharashtra have ramped up testing, hospital readiness, and public awareness campaigns.

The Union Health Ministry has urged citizens not to panic but to maintain caution — by following hygiene protocols, wearing masks in crowded places, and ensuring vaccinations are up to date.

Despite the surge, authorities stress that the situation remains under control and does not currently indicate the onset of a severe wave. The increase, however, is a timely reminder of COVID-19’s persistent threat and the need for continued vigilance.
