New Delhi: The Congress party has demanded a judicial inquiry into the deaths of several children allegedly caused by the consumption of contaminated cough syrup, calling the incident a grave public health tragedy that warrants accountability at the highest level.
Addressing the media, Congress leaders urged the central government to immediately constitute a judicial commission to investigate the circumstances that led to the deaths and identify those responsible — including pharmaceutical companies and regulatory authorities.
The party also called for adequate compensation for the bereaved families and demanded that one member from each affected family be provided a government job as part of the relief measures.
“This is not just a failure of regulation but a humanitarian disaster,” a Congress spokesperson said, stressing that the government must ensure stringent quality control over the production and export of medicines.
The opposition has also accused the government of negligence and lack of oversight, pointing to recurring incidents of spurious or substandard drugs leading to fatalities in various parts of the country.
The Congress reiterated that only a transparent judicial probe can restore public trust and ensure justice for the families who lost their children due to what it described as an “avoidable and unacceptable tragedy.”
