The Congress party has launched a fierce demand for an apology and resignation from Home Minister Amit Shah following his controversial remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar during a Rajya Sabha session. Shah remarked that invoking Ambedkar’s name has become a “fashion,” quipping that if people mentioned God’s name as frequently, they would reach heaven.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the statement, declaring it an insult to Ambedkar, the Dalit community, and the Indian Constitution. He asserted ;“The insult caused to Babasaheb Ambedkar by Amit Shah is wrong. I demand his resignation.”
This controversy ignited protests by Congress MPs and other opposition leaders inside Parliament premises, accusing the BJP and RSS of undermining Ambedkar’s legacy. Their calls for a public apology led to heated debates and disruptions, resulting in Lok Sabha adjournments.
The incident has further fueled discussions about the respect for Ambedkar’s contributions to India’s Constitution and intensified the political battle over his enduring legacy.
The fallout underscores the deep political divides and the significance of Ambedkar’s ideals in contemporary discourse.
