Thiruvananthapuram: Monsoon activity is set to pick up pace in Kerala as a fresh low-pressure system forms over the Bay of Bengal near the Andhra–Odisha coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced. The development is expected to bring widespread showers to the state today, with rain likely to linger through the week.
Under the influence of the system, Kerala can expect light to moderate rainfall for the next six days, punctuated by isolated heavy spells on August 12, 13, 17, and 18. The low pressure, born from a cyclonic circulation high over the central Bay of Bengal, is forecast to strengthen further over the next 48 hours as it drifts over the central-west and north-west Bay.
The IMD cautions that this intensification could trigger more active monsoon conditions in the days ahead. For now, Kannur and Kasaragod have been placed under a yellow alert for Wednesday, with “heavy rain” defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
In a safety advisory, fishing has been banned along the Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts until conditions improve.
