Bangalore Metro to Implement 41% Fare Hike Starting February 1

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced a significant 41% fare increase, effective February 1, 2025. Approved by the Fare Fixation Committee under the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act 2002, the hike has received the final go-ahead from the BMRCL board, chaired by Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of Urban Development Affairs.

Currently, metro fares range from ₹10 to ₹60, but with this revision, the maximum fare is set to rise to ₹85. Passengers traveling during off-peak hours, as well as those using the National Common Mobility Card or Metro smart cards, will continue to benefit from a 5% discount.

While a press briefing to officially announce the fare hike was initially planned, it has been postponed. The briefing is now scheduled to occur just before the revised fares come into effect.

This adjustment follows a recent 15% hike in Bengaluru’s bus fares, with auto-rickshaw fare increases also expected. These back-to-back fare revisions have sparked concerns over potential impacts on public transportation usage and increased traffic congestion in the city.

BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao has assured that further details, including a comprehensive revised fare chart, will be shared soon. This move, while aimed at enhancing metro operations, is anticipated to stir debate among commuters already grappling with rising transportation costs.
