Aviation Ministry Reviews Airport Preparedness as Dense Fog Disrupts Flights in Delhi

New Delhi witnessed major air traffic disruptions on Tuesday as dense fog enveloped the national capital, prompting the Civil Aviation Ministry to review airport preparedness and operational measures at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

According to flight tracking website FlightRadar24, at least 100 flights were cancelled, while over 300 flights faced delays, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. Poor visibility conditions during early morning hours severely affected flight operations, including arrivals and departures.

Senior officials of the Civil Aviation Ministry held an urgent review to assess coordination between airlines, air traffic control, and airport authorities. The focus was on ensuring passenger safety, minimising delays, and improving communication with travellers amid worsening winter fog conditions.

Airport authorities activated low-visibility procedures, while airlines issued advisories urging passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport. Officials said fog-related disruptions are expected to continue during peak winter, and airlines have been advised to strengthen contingency planning.

The situation highlights the recurring challenge posed by winter fog in North India, which often leads to large-scale flight disruptions despite advanced navigation systems and upgraded airport infrastructure.
