Thiruvananthapuram: The world-famous Attukal Pongala is being celebrated today with immense devotion. Thousands of devotees have gathered in the capital city to offer Pongala to Attukal Amma, with prayers and preparations completed. The Pongala rituals will commence at 9:45 AM with a holy purification ceremony, followed by the lighting of hearths (Aduppuvettu) at 10:15 AM. The sacred offering (Nivedyam) will be presented at 1:15 PM.
Massive crowds were seen at the Attukal Temple yesterday evening for Devi Darshan, forming long queues. The police have implemented strict security measures to ensure a smooth celebration. Various clubs and resident associations have arranged facilities for devotees offering Pongala. Hearths have been set up not just around the temple but across different parts of the city.
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has urged devotees not to light hearths on areas paved with expensive tiles as part of the Smart City project. Additionally, considering the scorching summer heat, authorities have advised maintaining adequate spacing between hearths.
Traffic regulations have been in effect since yesterday afternoon, and the health department will conduct special inspections at locations where drinking water and free meals (Annadanam) are distributed.
Mayor Arya Rajendran has emphasized strict adherence to the Green Protocol, urging devotees and Annadanam organizers to avoid single-use plastic and excessive waste generation. Instead, they are encouraged to use steel plates, glasses, and reusable utensils to keep the city clean and eco-friendly.
