Dibrugarh, Assam: Assam has confirmed its first Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) case of the season after a 10-month-old infant tested positive in Dibrugarh. The child was admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) with cold-like symptoms and is currently in stable condition.
Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, AMCH Superintendent, assured the public that HMPV is a common respiratory virus detected through routine testing and there is no cause for alarm.
Since 2014, Dibrugarh has recorded 110 cases of HMPV. Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, Senior Scientist at the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, highlighted that annual detections are normal and not unusual during this season.
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) primarily affects the respiratory system and is more common in winter and early spring. Infections are generally mild and self-limiting, with most patients recovering without the need for intensive medical care.
This case adds to the growing number of HMPV infections across India, with recent reports emerging from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Health experts advise the public to practice good respiratory hygiene and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
While the situation remains under control, authorities continue to monitor developments closely to ensure public safety.
