Amoebic Meningoencephalitis: Fresh Strains Detected in Kerala; Found in Free-Flowing Water, Dust

Kozhikode: Health authorities in Kerala have confirmed the detection of fresh strains of the rare and often fatal brain infection Amoebic Meningoencephalitis in the state. Recent studies have revealed that the deadly amoeba, which enters the human body through the nose, is present not only in free-flowing water sources but also in dust particles, raising serious public health concerns.

The discovery comes after multiple cases were reported in Kozhikode district, including the death of a nine-year-old girl and the infection of her younger brother. Medical experts warn that the disease progresses rapidly, attacking the brain and proving fatal in most cases if not detected early.

Officials from the health department have urged people to avoid swimming or bathing in contaminated ponds, rivers, and stagnant water, especially during the monsoon. They also advised extreme caution in children’s outdoor activities where dust exposure is high.

“We have identified new strains in both water and environmental samples. This indicates that the pathogen is spreading beyond expected habitats, which makes prevention even more challenging,” a senior health official said.

Kerala’s health department is intensifying surveillance and plans to launch awareness campaigns to educate the public on preventive measures. Hospitals have also been alerted to ensure early detection and treatment.
