Amaran, a biographical drama about the life of Major Mukund Varadarajan, has officially received clearance from the Ministry of Defence. This marks a major milestone for the film, which has both honored the legacy of a brave national hero and sparked debate over its portrayal of the soldier’s identity.
Starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, the film chronicles Major Mukund’s heroic actions, including his sacrifice during a counter-terrorism mission in Kashmir. While the film has been widely praised for showcasing his courage, it has faced criticism for not mentioning his caste identity. This decision was made after discussions with Major Mukund’s family, who preferred to focus on his identity as an Indian soldier rather than caste distinctions.
Despite the controversy, Amaran has been a massive box office success, grossing over Rs 150 crore worldwide, and continues to be celebrated for its tribute to national pride and sacrifice.
