AIIMS Debate: Suresh Gopi Roots for Alappuzha or Thrissur, BJP Clarifies Stand for All of Kerala

Thrissur: Union Minister Suresh Gopi has once again underlined that the proposed AIIMS in Kerala should be established either in Alappuzha or Thrissur, insisting that there is a clear and consistent stance on the matter since 2016.

Suresh Gopi noted that BJP state general secretary M.T. Ramesh had already clarified the party’s openness, stating that the BJP has no objection wherever AIIMS is set up in Kerala, as long as the state gets the project.

While Suresh Gopi has repeatedly highlighted Alappuzha’s developmental backwardness as a reason to prioritize the district, he maintained that if politics were to block its case, Thrissur should be the alternative.

His earlier remarks—hinting that AIIMS could even go to Tamil Nadu if not allotted to Thrissur or Alappuzha—sparked criticism from Ramesh, who emphasized that AIIMS is meant for Kerala as a whole, not a single district. Suresh Gopi added that the Centre will decide based on established criteria, while also accusing the state government of lacking interest in securing the prestigious institution for Kerala.
