Riyad (Saudi Arabia) : A native o f Kodampuzha in Kozhikode District, Abdul Rahim had been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for the last 18 years over a murder charge , will be shortly released, according to a press release of the Abdul Rahim Protection Committee here recently.
The court order setting aside the death sentence was issued on July 02 this year and the legal formalities for his release from jail had been completed.
The court issued the release order following remittance of blood money of Rs 35 crore as demanded by the victims family. The turning point in the case arose when the Malayali diaspora all over the world contributed liberally for the purpose as an ideal example of charity and the Committee had no difficulty in collecting the blood money, the release added.
Rahim was imprisoned to death and sentenced to jail in Saudi Arabia for the alleged murder of the 14-year old differently abled son of his employer.
Though Rahim’s counsel argued that it was an accident, his words had no weight against that of his employer .
The mobilization of Rs 35 crore was one of the biggest crowd funding in the State in May 2024.
The family of the victim has agreed to cancel the death sentence after receiving the blood money of Rs 35 crore, the release added.
