Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to take a major step in road safety by making blind-spot mirrors compulsory for all heavy vehicles—including buses, lorries, and school buses—from November 1. To support this move, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will launch a state-wide driver training and awareness campaign.
Blind-spot mirrors are designed to cover critical visibility gaps that regular rear-view mirrors miss, often endangering pedestrians and two-wheeler riders. Currently, only two standard mirrors are legally required on heavy vehicles.
The MVD will conduct awareness camps across the state, demonstrating the importance and correct use of blind-spot mirrors. In addition, training will be made mandatory for drivers of private buses, contract carriages, and lorries to ensure the new safety measure is effectively implemented.
