Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has set a new record in liquor sales this Onam season, with an astonishing ₹826 crore worth of alcohol sold in just 10 days. On Uthradam day alone—the eve of Thiruvonam—sales touched ₹137 crore, surpassing last year’s ₹126 crore.
The Karunagappally outlet in Kollam district emerged as the top seller, followed by the Ashramam outlet, also in Kollam. Officials said the surge was largely driven by heavy purchases on Uthradam, as all BEVCO and Consumerfed outlets remained closed on Thiruvonam day.
Compared to last year’s Onam sales of ₹818.21 crore, this year’s figures mark a clear jump. Liquor shops will remain closed on Thiruvonam, on September 7 for Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi, and again on September 21 for Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day, though bars will remain open.
