Heavy Rain Intensifies Across Kerala; Red Alert in Three Districts, Orange in Eight — Authorities Issue Warning

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its rain alerts across Kerala as the intensity of rainfall increases. A Red Alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur districts due to extremely heavy rainfall.

An Orange Alert has been declared in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha remain under a Yellow Alert. Widespread heavy rain is expected across the state today, influenced by a low-pressure area over the region.

For Sunday, alerts are in place for all districts except Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam, with predictions of isolated heavy rainfall. Yellow Alerts have been issued in nine districts as a precaution.

Looking ahead, Yellow Alerts are in place for Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod on Monday, and for Kannur and Kasaragod on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the IMD forecasts that rainfall will begin to weaken across the state by Monday.

The intensified rainfall is attributed to a low-pressure trough extending from the Gujarat coast to northern Kerala, and a well-marked low-pressure system over northern Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, which may strengthen further by tomorrow.

In addition, strong winds with speeds of 50 to 60 km/h are likely in isolated areas across Kerala today and tomorrow (Sunday), prompting officials to urge the public to remain cautious and follow safety advisories.
