The Kerala High Court’s directive to ensure a minimum of 220 instructional days, the General Education Department has revised school timings and working days across the state.
As per the new order, high school classes in Kerala will now run from 9:45 AM to 4:15 PM, adding 15 extra minutes each in the morning and afternoon sessions. The extended hours will be applicable on all weekdays except Fridays.
To make up for the mandated instructional days, classes 5 to 7 will now have six working days per week, including two additional non-consecutive Saturdays. For classes 8 to 10, six non-consecutive Saturdays have been designated as working days.
Key dates marked as working Saturdays:
- Upper Primary (UP) classes: July 26 and September 25
- High School classes: July 26, August 16, October 4, October 25, January 3 (2026), and January 31 (2026)
Meanwhile, students in classes 1 to 4 (Lower Primary) will not have any additional working Saturdays. The academic calendar has been thoughtfully revised to include 25 Saturdays, ensuring the 220-day requirement is met without putting added pressure on younger children.
The change reflects the government’s effort to balance judicial expectations with educational needs, aiming for a more structured and efficient academic year.
