PM Modi Launches Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024: A Grand Celebration of Northeast India’s Vibrance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024 today at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The three-day event highlights the cultural heritage, economic potential, and unique traditions of the eight northeastern states, collectively referred to as the “Ashtalakshmi” of India.

The festival features an impressive array of attractions, including artisan exhibitions showcasing over 34 Geographical Indication (GI) items such as the iconic Muga and Eri silk, along with traditional crafts and agricultural products unique to the Northeast. A cultural extravaganza highlights vibrant northeastern dances like the famous Bihu dance from Assam and captivating musical performances by the Shillong Chamber Choir. The fashion segment merges tradition and modernity, presenting a stunning blend of contemporary designs with northeastern textiles. Economic opportunities are also a focus, with buyer-seller meets and investment discussions targeting agriculture, tourism, and handicrafts. Additionally, the Ashtalakshmi Grameen Haat offers a lively marketplace experience, featuring over 320 artisans and organic producers, showcasing the region’s rich and diverse heritage.

The Mahotsav embodies the Prime Minister’s vision of positioning the Northeast as a pivotal growth engine for India. It aims to bridge economic gaps, foster cultural integration, and highlight the region’s critical role in national development​
