Cyclone Fengal Weakens Into Depression; Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Witness Heavy Rains

Chennai: Cyclone Fengal, which had posed a significant threat to the southeastern coast of India, has now weakened into a depression. However, heavy rains continue to lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, causing widespread waterlogging and disruptions.

Puducherry witnessed unprecedented rainfall, recording 46 cm of rain, the highest in recent history, due to the cyclone’s impact. Low-lying areas in the union territory and Tamil Nadu have been inundated, with authorities working round the clock to manage the situation and provide relief to affected residents.

In Tamil Nadu, Chennai and surrounding districts continue to experience heavy downpours, disrupting daily life and transportation. The state government has deployed disaster response teams to assist in rescue and relief operations, while fishermen have been advised to stay ashore.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that while the cyclone has weakened, rains are likely to persist over the next 24-48 hours in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of Andhra Pradesh. Citizens are urged to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone areas.

Relief measures, including the distribution of essential supplies, have been initiated, and helplines have been set up for those in need.
