Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group to Invest $1 Billion in Bhutan’s Renewable Energy

Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group is set to make a substantial investment of approximately $1 billion (around ₹8,300 crore) in Bhutan’s renewable energy sector. This ambitious initiative includes the development of a 1,270 MW capacity project, featuring a 500 MW solar plant and a 770 MW hydroelectric project, in partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Holding and Investments Ltd, the commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan.

The partnership aims to support Bhutan’s commitment to renewable energy and its net-zero emissions goals. The solar plant will be located in Gelephu Mindfulness City, projected to become the largest solar installation in Bhutan upon completion. Meanwhile, the Chamkharchhu-1 hydroelectric project will operate on a run-of-the-river model, further enhancing Bhutan’s existing power generation capacity of 2,452 MW.

Ambani emphasized the project’s role in promoting sustainable development and fostering economic growth, reinforcing Reliance’s long-term commitment to Bhutan. This investment marks the largest foreign direct investment by an Indian company in the country, signaling a strong commitment to collaboration in the renewable energy sector
