Firecracker Ban Largely Ignored in Delhi as Diwali Celebrations Continue

Several parts of the national capital witnessed firecracker bursting late on Sunday despite restrictions imposed on their use during Diwali, raising concerns over air pollution.

Fireworks were reported from areas including Pitampura, Burari, Mayur Vihar and the upscale Lutyens’ Delhi, indicating widespread violations of the restrictions.

Ahead of the festival, the Delhi government had urged residents to follow the Supreme Court’s directions regarding the sale and use of green firecrackers.

According to an order issued by the East district magistrate, the bursting of green firecrackers was permitted only on November 7 and 8, during two designated time slots — from 6 am to 7 am and from 8 pm to 10 pm.

However, reports of firecracker bursting beyond the permitted hours raised questions about the enforcement of the restrictions and efforts to control pollution in the capital.
