New Delhi: A report by the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute estimates that the ongoing ‘super El Niño’ could lead to around 451,000 additional heat-related deaths globally over the next six months compared with a normal year.
The study estimates about 15,800 additional heat-related deaths in India during the same period.
Study co-author Emily Grover-Kopec said the estimates were based on two key components — seasonal temperature forecasts and established relationships between temperature and mortality.
She told PTI that the study used seasonal forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF SEAS5) to assess temperature-mortality relationships.
