Faridabad: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday stressed the need for greater representation of women in democratic institutions, calling the 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies a historic requirement.
Inaugurating a two-day workshop on “Gender-Responsive Governance” organised by the National Commission for Women (NCW), Birla said a new generation of women leaders would emerge across political, administrative and social spheres.
He urged women to move beyond receiving support and opportunities and actively participate in shaping policies, programmes and laws. Birla also said India cannot achieve its developed-nation goal without the economic and social empowerment of women, who make up nearly half the population.
