Mysuru: Legendary South Indian playback singer S. Janaki passed away at the age of 88 in Mysuru on Saturday. She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital.
The news of her demise was shared by her granddaughter, Apsara, through a social media post. She requested the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve the loss of the iconic singer.
Fondly known as the “Nightingale of South India,” S. Janaki recorded thousands of songs in 17 languages during a remarkable career spanning several decades. She remained one of the most beloved voices among music lovers, particularly in Kerala, where her Malayalam songs continue to hold a special place in the hearts of listeners.
Janaki began her musical journey after securing second place in the All India Music Competition conducted by All India Radio in 1956. She made her Malayalam playback debut in 1957 with the song “Irul Moodukayo En Vazhiyil” from the film Minnunnathellam Ponnalla.
Her extraordinary contribution to Indian music has left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations of singers and music enthusiasts.
