The Indian National Congress will take a final decision today on whether to support G. Sudhakaran, who is contesting as an independent candidate in Ambalapuzha. The decision will be taken at a meeting of party leaders in New Delhi. Earlier, leaders of the UDF held discussions about extending support to Sudhakaran. Some leaders also met him and discussed the possibility of support.
Sources say Sudhakaran is ready to accept the support of the UDF. He has not demanded any ministerial post or other positions so far. The Congress leadership is also waiting for the opinion of local party leaders. Party leaders believe that there may be no need to field a Congress candidate in the constituency if Sudhakaran is contesting as an independent.
Meanwhile, the CPIM has strongly criticised Sudhakaran. The party recently organised a protest rally in Paravur against him. Responding to the criticism, Sudhakaran said the protest organised by the CPIM failed to attract a large crowd.
