Gehlot Questions Centre Over Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Despite Welcoming His Release

Former Rajasthan CM says episode raises serious concerns about the Union government’s functioning

Jaipur: Ashok Gehlot, former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, on Saturday questioned the Union government over the detention of activist Sonam Wangchuk, stating that the entire episode raises serious concerns about the functioning of the Centre.

While welcoming Wangchuk’s release, Gehlot said the developments surrounding his detention have raised questions about the working style of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gehlot pointed out that Wangchuk, who had earlier supported several policies of the prime minister, was booked under stringent provisions of the National Security Act after raising his voice for the rights of Ladakh and for environmental protection.

According to Gehlot, Wangchuk was subsequently detained and sent to jail in Jodhpur. He described the situation as ironic and said the incident raises broader concerns about how dissent and activism are being handled.

The Congress leader added that such developments warrant serious reflection on the government’s approach to democratic voices and public activism.
