Union Cabinet Likely to Consider Proposal to Rename Kerala as ‘Keralam’

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet is likely to take up the proposal to officially rename the state of Kerala as “Keralam,” following a resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly seeking the change. The move aims to align the state’s official name with its Malayalam pronunciation and cultural identity.

The Kerala Assembly had earlier unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to amend the Constitution to reflect the name “Keralam” in all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule. The state government argued that while “Kerala” is widely used in English and other languages, “Keralam” is the name by which the state is known in Malayalam and in official state documents.

If the Union Cabinet approves the proposal, a Constitutional amendment will be required to effect the change. The amendment would need to be passed by Parliament before the renaming becomes official.

Supporters of the move say the change would strengthen the state’s linguistic and cultural identity, while critics argue that procedural and administrative updates would need careful planning. The development is being closely watched as similar renaming proposals have been considered in other parts of the country in recent years.
