New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has categorically ruled out the implementation of Kerala’s SilverLine (K-Rail) project, stating that it is not practically feasible due to its severe environmental impact. Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said the Centre is, however, open to considering an alternative high-speed rail project, provided the state government demonstrates genuine interest and cooperation.
Criticising the Kerala government for its lack of support in executing railway projects, Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed out that only 14 per cent of the required land has been handed over so far. The minister welcomed metro rail expert E Sreedharan’s initiative to open an office for a high-speed rail project, describing him as a technically sound and knowledgeable figure in the railway sector. The minister also remarked that the state’s renewed push for the Angamaly–Sabarimala railway line appears to be election-driven. While he did not clarify whether Sreedharan’s high-speed rail efforts have the Centre’s approval, Vaishnaw said the Railway Ministry welcomes any individual or proposal that contributes to the development of India’s rail infrastructure.
