Kochi: Gold prices in the state continue their record-breaking rally, touching yet another historic high. In a sharp single-day surge, the price of gold jumped by ₹1,800 per sovereign, pushing rates close to the ₹1.20 lakh milestone. One sovereign (8 grams) of gold is now priced at ₹1,19,320, while the per-gram price has risen by ₹225 to ₹14,915.
The upward march of gold prices shows no signs of slowing down. Kerala witnessed gold crossing the ₹1 lakh mark for the first time on December 23, and since then, prices have remained on a steep upward trajectory.
Experts attribute the surge largely to fluctuations in the international market. Global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions are significantly influencing gold prices domestically.
Market volatility intensified following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of imposing higher tariffs on products from European countries opposing the US stance on Greenland’s control. Amid growing uncertainty, investors are increasingly turning to gold as a safe-haven asset, keeping demand strong and prices elevated.
